The Victorian Village Commission

The Victorian Village Commission (‘VVC’) is an agency of city government established in 1973 by the City Council.  The Commission consists of nine members appointed by the Mayor of Columbus and is the first line of approval for all exterior improvements and repairs done to any property in the historic district.  City code stipulates that no work can be undertaken on any property without a Certificate of Appropriateness from the VVC.  This certificate must be presented in order to receive a building permit.  The VVC reviews
applications and ensures that the work to be performed complements the historic nature of the district and will not result in the destruction of historic elements or the introduction of inappropriate, low-quality development. (See Commission Guidelines)

The Victorian Village Commission is a separate organization with a different focus and tasks.  The efforts of the Commission are enduringly valuable to the preservation of the historic district and the numerous positive benefits of that preservation.  By ensuring the quality and compatibility of the design and materials used in the renovations or building projects, the Victorian Village Commission maintains the desirability, the architectural integrity and the growth in property values that accompany such a rare and irreplaceable portion of our architectural history.

Meeting Location, Time and Date
Commission meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of each month, beginning at 6:15 p.m.  The meeting location is 109 North Front Street in the ground floor conference room.  Parking is available free at the parking meters in front of the building after 6:00 p.m., or in the city parking lot to the south of the building (the drive into the parking lot is straight from Gay Street).
