The Arts I.M.P.A.C.T Middle School has a committed teaching staff that assesses each student’s needs and focuses instruction based on those needs as they fit the Columbus Public School’s curriculum. The arts component of the school provides students with an alternative approach to learning the curriculum, utilizing Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory and Blooms Taxonomy of Higher Order Thinking. The results of this teaching approach are that 6th- and 8th-grade proficiency test scores are some of the highest of all middle schools within Columbus Public Schools. The students from AIMS have many performance-based opportunities in the Community (Gallery Hop, International Festival, Arts Festival, Wexner Center, Columbus Museum of Art, and King Arts Center. Art Sharing happens twice a year in the school, in addition to the many outstanding artists, who visit, perform, and interact with our students. Parents are welcome to visit our school at any time.

Second Avenue became the first year-round calendar school in Columbus Public in July 2000. This year-round calendar includes three intersessions during which students may choose to participate in academic and enrichment classes.

Our school has a unique partnership with St. Joseph Montessori School that allows both schools to collaborate in hosting a writing conference for parents, teachers, writers, etc. The collaboration allows for authors to visit our students each spring.

Second Avenue has numerous identified Gifted and Talented students who receive academic enrichment in a small group setting.

Our students’ talents are also demonstrated each spring in our school musical. Approximately thirty or more students make a year-long commitment in order to learn their lines, dance steps, and songs. It’s unlike any other musical you will see!!

Through Disadvantaged Pupil Impact Aid and class size reduction, the student to teacher ratio for our primary grades is 18 to 1. The lower ratio offers increased individual attention in academics. A volunteer administrative assistant helps with student management. A parent liaison focuses on increasing parent involvement. The Second Step Program is taught to explore intervention with students in conflict situations. Ohio Corps Girls in technology program is also available. The staff makes home visits to all the students’ homes.

We are committed to child-centered education with the Literacy Collaborative approach and an integrated curriculum with less reliance on textbooks. Throughout our instruction we focus upon international cultural awareness and understanding. Our ESL students bring a genuine interaction of cultures from throughout the world. Fifth Avenue Alternative Elementary is also proud of our international staff representation. We have teachers from Peru, Somalia and Taiwan. We also have a Japanese–American teacher and one born and raised in the Ivory Coast of Africa. These staff members bring their multicultural life experiences to share with the rest of the staff who present global awareness in their daily lessons and units of instruction. Fifth Avenue School is the recipient of the 21st Century Grant which allows for academic enrichment through after-school programming.
Fifth Avenue Alternative is leading the way in our district to implement Accelerated Reading and Accelerated Math programs, which utilizes the computers in the classrooms. In 2003 we were chosen to receive $128,000 in a grant (EETT) to Enhance Education Through Technology. This will bring laptop computers to our school, along with staff in-service and software, so that Fifth Avenue students will be prepared for the future. Computer use is a strong instructional piece at Fifth Avenue Alternative Elementary.

The Montessori approach is an overall program of growth and development and the work of each child is determined on an individual basis. The starting point for a child entering St. Joseph Montessori School is the skill level with which he or she comes to us. Skill areas such as language and math build on what has already been accomplished and our science, geography, and history present the entire world to even the youngest of children.

Short term goals are not enough when the task at hand is to educate the human potential. We want every child to develop to his or her fullest potential. We invite the child to become involved, we stimulate his or her mind, and we nourish a love of learning.

This extraordinary approach to learning is one that is well tested and the results of our efforts demonstrate that it truly works. Standardized test scores are consistently in the ninetieth percentile range and parents whose children move on from our eighth grade share with us that their children make an excellent adjustment and do well academically. Students take with them something that is most important to us, a positive and eager approach toward learning.
